DirecTV Pushes into the Internet Market

DirecTV hasn’t ever really taken part in the growing online market and has been basically sitting on the sidelines in regards to trying new things out. Now DirecTV wants to change that philosophy and has decided they are going to launch their very own video on demand service this spring. The new service is called “DirecTV On Demand” and you can currently test it out in beta mode.

There plans for the service are to offer two methods of receiving the movies and television shows and those are as followed.

1. Through automatic transmission of chosen movie titles which are stored on the subscriber’s digital recorder ready to be viewed.

2. Second method will be through internet downloads of television shows and other additional content.

DirecTV has plans to offer up to 3000 movies and television shows once the website is in full swing. Almost all of the content will be hosted and accessed on the internet and automatic transmission methods will be used to send the movies to the people.

In order to be able to use the DirecTV video on demand application you will need to have the DirecTV DVR Receiver so that you will be able to watch the movies and shows. The receiver allows all of the streaming to be in high definition which is what most of the people wanted so DirecTV delivered it. With a huge video on demand market emerging and many corporations and companies getting involved with the action you can expect it was almost necessary for DirecTV to make the streaming high definition. Without it they wouldn’t attract too many people as more and more video on demand websites are offering high definition videos as well.

DirecTV has been very slow at getting into the online market and almost all its competitors from the satellite industry, phone industry and cable industry have done something in the online market already to establish a presence. DirecTV will need to offer a very good and well maintained service in order to attract the user base it’s looking to achieve. They also won’t to make sure they keep their share of the pie in the video on demand market and by attempting this service I think they are taking a giant step forward and should be able to gain some of the users from other services of the same nature.

We will have to wait a bit until the full version of the DirecTV video on demand service becomes live but I will be definitely looking forward to testing it out once it does come out. I think the high definition will win a lot of people over as quite a few people still don’t have HDTV’s and if they can access HDTV quality on there computers they will.
